What is Clawcamp?
Clawcamp is intended to be an intensive skills building workshop for clawhammer
banjo players. While many other camps feature a large number of classes and
instructors, Clawcamp is usually taught by just one, Dan Levenson with additional teachers included as the camp size grows. There is often
a coach – usually The Lovely Miss Jennifer – to help you along
and give you another perspective as well as some more direct one on one attention.
They can be from a weekend to a week long.
We work on all aspects of clawhammer banjo playing according to level and
interests of students including both right and left hand styles, double thumb,
drop thumb, rolls (often mistakenly called "the Galax Lick"), the "chuck," tuning,
timing, hammers, pulls, and WHY and where you would choose to use them. We
will also deal with topics such as playing position, ergonomics of motion (how
not to get HURT in the process of having a good time!) and how to play with
others. There will be an intensive "listening" session and other
sessions can include a session on writing tab and one on performance techniques.
Actual topics and levels will be dependent on capabilities and desires of
attendees.
We will be joined by Clawhammer great Bob Carlin on this one! Returning by popular demand. The food was great, the accommodations wonderful and we just got to do it again!

Clawcamp West
It's official. We will be having camp in San Diego this coming winter and holding our daytime classes at the beautiful Balboa Park at the House of Hospitality. Friday's evening reception and demonstration concert will be held San Diego's Old Time Music where I am teaching this year. They have a wonderful concert space and it is truly a wonderful shop full of banjos, fiddles and guitars - OH MY!
